while in nyc this weekend (to see the armory show) we took a detour to visit the new york public library. we're planning a new project based on my library obsession so stephen and i went to find inspiration at the main branch in midtown manhattan. the interiors of this 99 year old building were unbelievable.
my favorite part was finding a section of books with handmade paper jackets in the "united states and local history division". stephen peeked through a window of the "map division" storage room and could not believe the piles and piles of maps (not to mention a few globes that would fit right into our collection). to see more photos of our field trip to the new york public library, click here.
Des Moines had a library downtown that was so very much like these rooms - the research room alone was so beautiful and other time-ly. I could live at the NYPL. For real.

Just today I was driving past a local library and began to blog in my mind about it. I believe libraries are sacred spaces. Embracing knowledge, experience, and imagination is a divine gesture.

Anything that involves maps always good to look at. Glad something like this still existed and got spread in blogs.
