i have been wanting matching, vintage, alarm clocks forever. i'm not sure if anyone else would have been as excited to open two (almost alike) old clocks on christmas morning... but i love them (how perfect is the blue second hand). thanks stephen.

in case you are wondering why i would want two (almost alike) clocks... i like to set my time ahead 10 minutes (because i hate to be late) and stephen likes his to be the "correct" time (because he hates being lied to by a clock). now we both get our way!

we used the martha stewart paper house kit and turned all the small pieces inside out. after we added letterpress prints to all the little bits... we put them together. (i only wish we made more).

even better than a mustache on a stick

i was so excited for stephen to open this gift! erin dollar in portland makes amazing yarn (and felt) beards and i have to say it is one of the best things i have ever purchased on etsy. seriously! almost as good as the perfectly crafted faux beard is her  blog & shop name: i made you a beard. (i also got stephen this beard drawing by erin).

i found out about this must have accessory from lucy, when she posted this pic of ryan wearing a felt version of the faux beard. thanks lucy!

"i love you like ray loved charles"... i say this to stephen all the time. i think he has been dreaming about a fiberglass rocker since we studied at cranbrook (where ray and charles met). this week, while i was out of town, this chair and a small note (with the same message) surprised him at work.

in may of 1941, charles eames sent this letter to ray kaiser, asking her to marry him (on cranbrook stationary). the letter can be found in this book: "an eames primer".

aftermath

we feel pretty lucky that this year we were able to surprise each other with so many handmade gifts (stephen's chair and shauna's clocks were two pretty good exceptions to this rule).

...we perched our fake tree on a real stump and used color copies of portraits as our gift wrap. our favorite part is the speech bubble tags.

blue christmas
